✅ Private Harry is a great option to upgrade your broodmare......
So many smaller breeders have a nice mare from a stallion that may not have set the world on fire so far... leading to a lessor commercial weanling/yearling prospect in the sales ring !
The cost of the sales process is enormous [preparation, vet fees, transport, handling satff, sales entry fee and commissions] and at the moment, the market is not strong for those with mares at the middle to lower end.
It is the conundrum for smaller breeders, starting the process today and heading to the sales ring approximately 30 months after the stallion service - nobody can predict the future market conditions and furthermore the fickle nature of which stallions will be perceived to be "on the nose" or trainers "don't like them", leading you to feeling contrite about the process.
It makes sense for smaller breeders to select the stallion on "genetics/pedigree" that match your broodmare and plan for a breed to race option.... regardless of the stallion popularity
Many of the 100+ year old theories on breeding are still relevant today as they were through previous generations which created champion racehorses.
If markets change and stallion popularity alters, you know that strong breeding plans will generate a greater chance of having a nice horse in theory.
Consider pedigree patterns, sex balancing of key thoroughbreds in your BM's pedigree and try to reinforce female family numbers through your BM and the stallion.
Point your focus towards sex balancing key ancestors in the pedigree of the theoretical horse within generations 4-5-6 considered the engine room of the racehorse.
"Return to the Stallion, the best blood of his own Dam"
The best old adage I reference, is strongly consider sex balancing to the bottom half of the stallion [his maternal half of his own pedigree].
Now that Tom Kitten has been gelded, this leaves PRIVATE HARRY and ANGEL CAPITAL as the two best future stallion prospects of Harry Angel that are in Australia [so far, as of March 2025].
For this exercise, the focus is entirely on the top half of your broodmare and without knowing the maternal side of her pedigree, these following notes on sending her to Private Harry is based entirely on the top half as these stallions, as they will all produce the same result being the direct Damsire sitting under Private Harry as the stallion.
I do not want to appear bumptious on this topic, however its worth pursuing and I trust you derive benefit from these findings.
The focus here is to give hope for small breeders that based on this one example, you can always upgrade the future foal as a result of this strong focus to "return to the Stallion, the best blood of his own Dam".
