Variation of the stallion lineage in your pedigree

In the 5 generations of any pedigree, every horse will have exactly 16 stallion lines:

here is an example of Shamus Award:

The top half of this pedigree being those starting with the letter "S", [so S 1 to 8] and those starting with the "X" are the bottom half [ so X 1 to 8].

I have placed an orange highlight over all the "even numbers" as these will not appear on the 5 gen pedigree page of your mated foal.

"How will the Stallion look on a pedigree of your bred foal"

It's quite Simple.... when you look at any 5 gen's of a stallion, focus on the "odd numbered" in a 16 stallion pedigree:

The top half of your foal will show lines S1, S3, S5 and S7 whilst the bottom half of the stallion will make up the other 4 positions in your bred foal being X1, X3, X5 and X7.

Here is the full pedigree of Shamus Award and following the above instructions.

:::::::

You can see how a 5 gen pedigree of your bred foal will look

(or at least the top half), as your broodmare will make up the bottom section of the foal's pedigree.

The process of jotting this down on paper and doing your own transformation in planning is very simple - here in note form is the above switch.

"Measuring Stallion variation from the 19th nick from origin"

Here is another view of Shamus Award, this time showing an extension to the right side of the pedigree of where I measure variations, being the 19th nick from origin of Darley Arabian, Godolphin Arabian and Byerly Turk.

So many European shuttle stallions have all 16 lines of Darley, as you will see later in the blog - many of the best performed Australian Stallions carry at least one line of either or both Godolphin Arabian and Byerly Turk.

"Pharos and Sickle are the most dominant strains represented"

Of the current stallions available in Australia, Pharos [Nearctic, Nasrullah and Royal Charger] have 2078 strains. Whilst Sickle [represented by Polynesian] has 463 strains.

To provide some scope - here are the leading stallion lines of variation

[measuring the nick at 19 from origin]:

  • Pharos - 2078 strains

    • Northern Dancer, Danzig, Sadlers Wells, Sir Tristram, Halo, Nijinsky 'etc"

  • Sickle - 463 strains

    • Raise a Native, Mr Prospector, Machiavellian, Gone West, Woodman 'etc"

  • Star Kingdom - 288 strains

    • Biscay, Kaoru Star, Bletchingly, Marscay, Canny Lad, Luskin Star 'etc"

  • Tenerani - 220 strains

    • Ribot, Tom Rolfe, His Majesty, Graustark, Hoist The Flag, 'etc"

  • Teddy - 216 strains

    • Bull Lea, Damascus, Admirals Voyage, Citation, Tantieme, Lombard 'etc"

  • Pharamond - 216 strains

    • Tom Fool, Silly Season, Buckpasser, Lunchtime, Adios, Snippets, 'etc"

  • Fairway - 151 strains

    • Court Martial, Wilkes, Vain, Troy, Petingo, Fair Trial, My Swanee, 'etc"

  • Princequillo - 139 strains

    • Prince John, Baldric, Round Table, Pompeii Court, Knightly Manner, 'etc"

  • Forli - 98 strains

    • Hyperion, Sequalo, Thatching, Grand Chaudiere, First Consul 'etc"

  • Vandale - 47 strains

    • Star Way, Star Appeal, Herbager, 'etc"

  • Donatello - 37 strains

    • Alycidon, Busted, Crepello, Espresso, Idomeneo, Crest of the Wave 'etc"

  • Vieux Manoir - 24 strains

    • Exbury, Zamazaan, Phizam, Tennyson, Brantome, Le Haar Val De Loir 'etc"

What does this all mean..... well, here is a cross section on some of Australia's leading stallion plus new/recent to the ranks. I have compiled the full list for future reference

Here is the amount Darley Arabian - highlighting Pharos/Sickle in these stallions:

You can see the true variation of the Darley Arabian lines within the following:

  • I am Invincible has 10 variations of the Darley Arabian Origin

  • Nicconi has 10 variations of the Darley Arabian Origin

  • Shamus Award has 10 variations of the Darley Arabian Origin

  • So You Think has 10 variations of the Darley Arabian Origin

  • Anamoe has 9 variations of the Darley Arabian Origin

  • Dundeel has 9 variations of the Darley Arabian Origin

  • Zoustar has 9 variations of the Darley Arabian Origin

And if you look at the Pharos/Sickle lines within the 5 gen pedigree of these stallions, you can see these have the lowest numbers reliant of those two dominant lines:

  • I am Invincible has 5 Lines of Pharos and Sickle

  • Shamus Award has 5 Lines of Pharos and Sickle

  • Zoustar has 5 Lines of Pharos and Sickle

  • Dirty Work has 6 Lines of Pharos and Sickle

  • Nicconi has 6 Lines of Pharos and Sickle

  • Written Tycoon has 6 Lines of Pharos and Sickle

"What other major lines are represented by these stallions"

As mentioned earlier, the other "main lines" of variation stem from Nick 19 of Star Kingdom, Tenerani, Teddy and Pharamond.

In total, just over 60+ lines are represented of Nic19 from origin and many top stallions have unique stallion lineages as part of their 16 stallions in their 5 generation pedigree.

"Champion race mares and how much Pharos they have"

Nothing better than putting some data behind the theory on variation, as such i have taken a line through the best Aust/NZ mares over recent years and added Winx plus Black Caviar".

They are not all the same, however it's interesting to see they are lower in Pharos lines.

You can see that Sunlight has 10 different stallion lines from Darley Arabian, whilst Verry Elleegant and Legarto have 9, whilst Winx, Black Caviar, Imperatriz, Joliestar and Zougotcha all have 8 stallion variations of the Darley Arabian stallions.

And to highlight the same data as earlier, the lowest amount of Pharos stallions carried by these champion race mares are Sunlight x 5, Probabeel x 6 and Black Caviar + Joliestar have only 7 lines of Pharos.

"Contact me if you have any special requests or analysis"

I hope this helps on assisting you to read your "future pedigrees of planned mating's at a glance", in particular if your foal is a filly and joins your future brand of broodmares.

I have some data on these stallion lineages on the website and watch our for future posts where i focus on each variation and post their lineage in full.

This is not a paid advert, however as my gesture of goodwill for using Shamus Award as an example on this post,

::::::

Shown below is the table of winners for season 24/25, without doubt the best performing stallion striking at winners to runners of better than 1 in 3 runners.

Not to mention the data I showed earlier - he is an outstanding option for many broodmares.

Enjoy.....
